Louis was a soldier for many years. He worked in many battles. He fought in places like Algeria and Crimea. He also led troops in Italy. Because of his hard work, he won many honors. One big honor was the Légion d'honneur.

In 1870, a war started in France. This was the Franco-Prussian War. At first, Louis did not lead the army in this war. Later, he became the governor of Paris. He was also the leader of the troops there. He tried to keep the city safe during a siege. A siege is when an army surrounds a city.

In September 1870, Louis became a top leader. He led the Government of National Defense. This was a very hard time for France. He promised the city would not give up. But the war was too much. He resigned his job in early 1871. He later joined the National Assembly. He retired from the army in 1873. Louis died in 1896.
