Daguerre discovered that a very short exposure could create an invisible, or "latent," image. He could then make this invisible image visible through chemical development. He achieved this by exposing the plate to the vapor of mercury heated to 75 °C. This breakthrough allowed for much faster photography than the methods used by Niépce.

Once the image was visible, it had to be "fixed" to prevent it from darkening further. To fix the image, Daguerre originally used concentrated, heated salt water to remove the unaffected silver iodide. Later, a more effective solution called "hypo," or sodium thiosulfate, became the standard. The final result was an exact reproduction of the scene captured by the lens. However, the image was laterally reversed, meaning it looked like a mirror image. To fix this, photographers had to use a mirror or an inverting prism during the exposure.

The daguerreotype was a unique, one-of-a-kind image. Unlike modern photography, it could not be easily duplicated or printed.

If you wanted another copy, you had to take a new photograph of the original plate. Because the silver surface was very soft and could tarnish in the air, these images were delicate. They were almost always sealed under glass or kept in small folding cases. A true daguerreotype is always an image on a highly polished silver surface.

In 1839, the French government made a historic decision regarding the invention. After Daguerre presented his work to the French Academy of Sciences, the news spread quickly. The government acquired the rights to the process in exchange for lifetime pensions for Daguerre and Niépce's son, Isidore. On August 19, 1839, the invention was presented to the world as a gift "free to the world." This allowed the technology to spread rapidly across the globe.

While the daguerreotype was eventually replaced by paper processes like the calotype and the wet collodion process, its impact was permanent.
