It is the largest newspaper in the Western United States. It is also the sixth-largest newspaper in the entire country. People read its stories on printed paper or through digital screens. Since 2012, the paper has used a paywall to work. This is a system where readers pay a fee for subscriptions. These subscriptions help the paper earn money to keep working.

The paper earns money in a few different ways. Most of its revenue comes from monthly or annual subscriptions. It also makes money from display advertising. Some money comes from sponsored articles and press releases. These are special pieces of writing provided by companies. The paper has changed how it works over many years. It used to focus more on national news. Now, it focuses more on news from California and Southern California.

It was first called the Los Angeles Daily Times. Nathan Cole Jr. and Thomas Gardiner were the first directors. In 1882, Harrison Gray Otis became the editor. He also bought a small part of the company. Otis wanted to help Los Angeles grow very quickly. This goal sometimes caused hard problems for the paper. In 1910, a bomb hit the headquarters building. This event sadly killed 21 people.

Many different people have led the paper through its history. Otis Chandler was a famous publisher from 1960 to 1980. He wanted the paper to be respected across the nation. He hired more reporters and paid them more money. Under his leadership, the paper won many Pulitzer Prizes. These are prestigious awards given for excellent journalism. The paper has won over 40 Pulitzer Prizes in total. Other leaders like Harry Chandler and Norman Chandler also ran the company.

Ownership of the paper has changed many times recently. In 2000, the Tribune Company of Chicago bought the paper. Later, a businessman named Sam Zell took control. The company faced many financial struggles and filed for bankruptcy in 2008. In 2018, Patrick Soon-Shiong bought the paper for $500 million. He also took on $90 million in pension liabilities. The paper moved to El Segundo in July 2018. It sits near the Los Angeles International Airport. In 2025, Soon-Shiong announced he would take the paper public.
