He was a member of the British royal family. He was the maternal uncle of Prince Philip. He was also a second cousin once removed of Queen Elizabeth II. Throughout his life, he held many high-ranking positions. He served in the Royal Navy during both World Wars. He also managed the transition of India to independence. His career was marked by both great success and intense debate.

Mountbatten was born on June 25, 1900, at Frogmore House. His parents were Prince Louis of Battenberg and Princess Victoria of Hesse. His maternal grandparents were Louis IV and Princess Alice. Princess Alice was a daughter of Queen Victoria. Because his father's marriage was morganatic, the family held lesser titles. They were styled as Serene Highness rather than Royal Highness. This meant they were ineligible for the title of Prince of Hesse.

During World War I, the family changed their name. In 1917, King George V changed the royal house name. It changed from Saxe-Coburg and Gotha to the House of Windsor. This was done to appeal to British nationalist sentiment. Mountbatten's father adopted the surname Mountbatten to sound more British. This was an anglicisation of the name Battenberg. Louis began using the title Lord Louis Mountbatten at this time. He had already served as a midshipman since 1916.

He also worked as a Senior Wireless Instructor. These technical skills helped him rise through the ranks.
