Lophiodon was a group of large animals. They lived in western Europe a long time ago. 
These animals had very special teeth. Their cheek teeth had two ridges. This helped them eat leaves. We call this way of eating folivory.
Lophiodon were heavy and strong. They had thick bodies. They used strong front legs to move. They were not fast runners. They had four toes on their front feet. They had three toes on their back feet.
As the world changed, these animals grew. Some species became very big. They were often the largest animals in their area.
Lophiodon was a group of extinct animals from a long time ago. These animals belonged to a family called Lophiodontidae. They lived in western Europe during the Early to Middle Eocene. 
These animals had a very special way of eating. Their cheek teeth were bilophodont, which means they had two ridges. These ridges helped them eat leaves, a way of life called folivory.
Lophiodon had a heavy and strong body. They were not built for fast running. Instead, they were robust like a modern rhinoceros or hippopotamus. They used muscular front legs to support their weight. On their front feet, they had four toes. Their back feet had only three toes. This was an older trait for these types of animals. Some might have even spent time in the water.
Scientists first studied these fossils in the year 1804. A French scientist named Georges Cuvier looked at them first. 
As the climate changed, these animals changed too. Some species grew much larger than others. For example, L. lautricense was one of the very largest. 
Lophiodon was an extinct genus of perissodactyls. Perissodactyls are a group of mammals that includes modern horses, rhinoceroses, and tapirs. Lophiodon belonged to the family Lophiodontidae. This family was part of a larger group called Ancylopoda. These animals lived in western Europe from the Early to Middle Eocene. 
The anatomy of Lophiodon was very specialized for its environment. Its skull had a narrow rostrum, which is the snout area. It also had a tall and domed braincase. The teeth of Lophiodon were bilophodont. This means the cheek teeth, mainly the molars, had two transverse ridges. This shape was perfect for folivory, which is a diet consisting of leaves.
Lophiodon had a very specific body structure. They were robust animals, meaning they were strong and heavy-set. They were non-cursorial, so they were not built for fast running. Instead, they were built like modern rhinoceroses or hippopotamuses.
The history of studying Lophiodon began in 1804. The French palaeontologist Georges Cuvier was the first to study these fossils. 
Throughout the 1800s, many different species were identified. Some species were later moved to other genera like Chalicotherium or Coryphodon. For example, Richard Owen named the subgenus Coryphodon in 1845. He noted it was roughly the size of a horse. 
The size of Lophiodon changed significantly over time. This was an evolutionary trend driven by ecological shifts. Some species, like the basal L. baroensis, were quite small. Other species, like L. rhinocerodes and L. lautricense, were much larger.
Lophiodon eventually became extinct by the end of the Middle Eocene. They were the last remaining members of the Lophiodontidae family. We do not know the exact cause of their disappearance. It may have been due to climate change and shifting environments. They also likely faced competition from diversifying palaeotheres. Their extinction was part of a larger faunal turnover. This turnover also caused the extinction of European hyrachyids and certain crocodylomorphs.
