At first, he thought they were a type of small tapir. In 1822, he gave them the name Lophiodon. This name means "crested tooth" in Greek. He chose this because of the ridges on their teeth. Many other scientists studied these fossils throughout the 1800s. They found bones in many places like France and Italy.

As the climate changed, these animals changed too. Some species grew much larger than others. For example, L. lautricense was one of the very largest.

They eventually went extinct by the end of the Middle Eocene. We do not know the exact reason they disappeared. It might have been because the climate changed. They may have also faced hard jobs competing with new animals. This was part of a big change for many living things.

Lophiodon was an extinct genus of perissodactyls. Perissodactyls are a group of mammals that includes modern horses, rhinoceroses, and tapirs. Lophiodon belonged to the family Lophiodontidae. They used muscular forelimbs to support their heavy bodies. Their feet showed primitive traits for perissodactyls. They had four toes on their forelimbs and three toes on their hindlimbs. Some scientists believe they may have even had semi-aquatic behaviors.

The history of studying Lophiodon began in 1804. The French palaeontologist Georges Cuvier was the first to study these fossils.

At first, Cuvier thought they were small tapirs. In 1812, he placed them in the genus Palaeotherium. However, in 1822, he created the genus name Lophiodon. The name comes from Greek words meaning "crested tooth." He chose this because of the hill-like cusps on their molars. Many other scientists spent the 19th century reassigning these fossils to different groups.

Throughout the 1800s, many different species were identified. Some species were later moved to other genera like Chalicotherium or Coryphodon. For example, Richard Owen named the subgenus Coryphodon in 1845. He noted it was roughly the size of a horse.

Other researchers, like Jean-Baptiste Noulet, described species like L. lautricense. This species was found in the French commune of Lautrec. It was a very large member of the genus.

The size of Lophiodon changed significantly over time. This was an evolutionary trend driven by ecological shifts. Some species, like the basal L. baroensis, were quite small. Other species, like L. rhinocerodes and L. lautricense, were much larger.

L. lautricense was one of the largest species in its family. It lived in an environment where it had no size competition. These animals generally lived in hot, forested, and humid environments.

Lophiodon eventually became extinct by the end of the Middle Eocene. They were the last remaining members of the Lophiodontidae family. We do not know the exact cause of their disappearance. It may have been due to climate change and shifting environments. They also likely faced competition from diversifying palaeotheres. Their extinction was part of a larger faunal turnover. This turnover also caused the extinction of European hyrachyids and certain crocodylomorphs.
