This wood helps the bow bend. When the bow bends, it can shoot an arrow. Longbows were used in many wars a long time ago. People in England and Wales were very good at using them. Today, some people use bows for fun or for hunting. They are light and quiet when you shoot. It is fun to learn about these old tools.

A self bow is made from just one piece of wood. Traditional English longbows are often self bows. They use yew because it is strong and light.

One part of the wood is called sapwood. It is on the outside of the tree. Sapwood is good for tension, which is a pulling force. The inside part is called heartwood. Heartwood is good for compression, which is a squeezing force. Some people make laminated bows. These are made by gluing different woods together. This helps the bow use the best parts of each wood.

In the Middle Ages, English and Welsh archers were famous. They used longbows in many big battles. Later, people began to use guns and cannons. Today, people still use longbows for fun or hunting. They are lighter and quieter than some other bows.

People in many different cultures used them for hunting or for war. In Europe, these bows have a very long history. They date back to the Paleolithic era. Since the Bronze Age, makers often used wood from yew trees. If they could not find yew, they used wych elm instead.

Making a longbow is a special way of working with wood. A traditional longbow is a self bow. This means it is made from just one single piece of wood. Makers often use the radius of a yew tree for this. The outside part is called sapwood, which handles tension or pulling forces. The inside part is heartwood, which handles compression or squeezing forces.

Modern makers might also make laminated bows. These are made by gluing different types of wood together. This uses the best strengths of each piece.

We can learn a lot about these bows from history. A longbow was found in 1991 in the Ötztal Alps. It belonged to a natural mummy named Ötzi. That bow was made from yew and dates to around 3300 BC. Another yew bow was found in a peat bog in Scotland. That one dates from 4040 BC to 3640 BC. In Denmark, forty longbows from the 4th century AD were found in a peat bog. These finds show that people have used longbows for thousands of years.

In the Middle Ages, the English and Welsh were very famous for their longbows. They used them in many big battles against the French. These included the battles of Crécy in 1346 and Agincourt in 1415. During the reign of Edward III, certain makers had to join the army. This was part of the law to ensure people practiced archery. The longbow remained a main weapon until cannons were used in 1450 and 1453. The Battle of Flodden in 1513 was a major moment for English archery. It was the last big battle on English soil using the longbow as the main weapon.

Today, longbows are still used for fun or for hunting. They are different from modern recurve or compound bows. A longbow is usually lighter and quicker to get ready. It also shoots more quietly than other types. However, modern bows can shoot arrows faster and more accurately. The longbow has left a big mark on our world. Even modern military gear uses its name. This includes the Apache Longbow helicopter and the Longbow Hellfire missile.

A longbow is a tall type of bow designed to allow for a very long draw. This design is important because it enables the archer to store significant energy in the limbs of the bow.

Throughout history, various cultures have used longbows for both hunting and warfare. In Europe, these tools have a deep history reaching back to the Paleolithic era. Since the Bronze Age, makers have primarily used yew wood to create these weapons. If yew was not available, they often turned to wych elm as an alternative.

To understand how a longbow works, we must look at the mechanics of wood under stress. A traditional longbow is often a self bow, which means it is crafted from a single piece of wood. Makers often use a yew bowstave cut from the radius of a tree. This allows them to utilize two different parts of the wood: the sapwood and the heartwood. The sapwood is the outer layer and acts as the back of the bow. It is excellent at handling tension, which is the pulling force applied when the string is drawn. The heartwood makes up the inner two-thirds of the bow. This part acts as the belly and is strong in compression, which is the squeezing force felt on the inside of the curve.

Modern technology has introduced new ways to build these tools through lamination. A laminated bow is made by gluing different pieces of timber together to combine their strengths. For example, a maker might use hickory or bamboo for the back to handle tension. They might then use lemonwood or yew for the belly to handle compression. This process allows the bow to be more efficient than a single piece of wood might be. In Japan, traditional yumi bows are also laminated. These use a bamboo core with hardwood strips on the sides to prevent the bow from twisting.

Archaeology provides us with amazing evidence of how longbows were used in the distant past. In 1991, researchers in the Ötztal Alps found a yew longbow with a natural mummy named Ötzi. This bow dates back to approximately 3300 BC. Other ancient finds include a yew bow from a Scottish peat bog in Tweedsmuir. Radiocarbon dating places that bow between 4040 BC and 3640 BC. In Somerset, England, another yew bow was dated to between 2700 and 2600 BC. Furthermore, forty longbows from the 4th century AD were discovered in a Danish peat bog at Nydam.

During the Middle Ages, the longbow became a dominant force in European warfare. The English and Welsh were particularly famous for their powerful longbows. They used these weapons to great effect during the Hundred Years' War. Notable victories occurred at the Battle of Crécy in 1346, Poitiers in 1356, and Agincourt in 1415.

The importance of the bow was so high that King Edward III passed laws regarding its use. These laws allowed fletchers and bowyers to be impressed into the army. It also required people to practice archery regularly. The longbow remained a primary weapon until the French used cannons to break formations at Formigny in 1450 and Castillon in 1453. The Battle of Flodden in 1513 was a landmark event, as it was the last major battle on English soil where the longbow was the principal weapon.

Even after firearms became common, the longbow stayed relevant in certain contexts. In 1588, the English militia included many archers to prepare for the Spanish Armada. The Kent militia, for instance, mustered 1,662 archers out of 12,654 total men. The Battle of Tippermuir in 1644 may have been the last time the longbow was used in significant numbers in the British Isles. Today, the longbow is used mostly for recreation and traditional hunting. While modern compound bows are faster and more accurate, the longbow is often lighter and quieter. It is also much quicker to prepare for shooting.

The legacy of the longbow extends far beyond ancient battlefields and modern archery clubs. The name "longbow" has been adopted by several pieces of advanced military technology. This includes the Dakota Longbow T-76 sniper rifle. It is also found in the AN/APG-78 Longbow radar system used on Apache attack helicopters. Finally, the AGM-114L Longbow Hellfire is an air-to-ground missile that uses millimeter-wave guidance. From ancient yew staves to modern guided missiles, the concept of the longbow continues to influence how we think about precision and power.
