The university's history began in 1472 in the city of Ingolstadt.

Duke Ludwig IX of Bavaria-Landshut founded it with papal blessing. At its start, it had four main faculties: philosophy, medicine, jurisprudence, and theology. The first rector was a man named Christopher Mendel of Steinfels. For many years, the school was a center for the Counter-Reformation due to Jesuit influence. By the late 1700s, the Enlightenment shifted the focus toward natural sciences. This era changed how scholars approached the study of the physical world.

Major shifts occurred during the Napoleonic Wars in the early 1800s. In 1800, King Maximilian I Joseph moved the university to Landshut. He did this because French aggression threatened the city of Ingolstadt. In 1802, the school was officially renamed Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität. This name honored both the founder, Ludwig IX, and King Maximilian I.

In 1826, King Ludwig I moved the university to Munich. The institution eventually moved from the Old Academy to its new home on Ludwigstraße. This move helped the university become a central part of the Bavarian capital.

During the late 19th century, LMU became a global leader in science.

This was a period of massive expansion and famous discoveries. In 1903, women were finally allowed to study at Bavarian universities. By 1918, women made up 18% of the student body. That same year, Adele Hartmann became the first woman in Germany to earn a habilitation. A habilitation is a higher doctorate that allows a person to teach at a university. These academic advancements helped LMU maintain its status during the Weimar Republic.

The university has seen many significant numbers in its modern era. In the 2025/26 winter semester, LMU had 52,658 matriculated students. Of these, 7,451 were freshmen starting their studies. International students made up 11,658 people, or about 22% of the total. The university also manages a very large operating budget. In 2024, the funding was 879.0 million euros without the hospital. When including the university hospital, the total funding reached approximately 2.25 billion euros. This money supports intense research and high-level teaching.

LMU's academic success is proven by its connection to 50 Nobel laureates. These include famous scientists like Max Planck and Wilhelm Röntgen. The university is also a member of the U15 and the LERU. It has been named a "University of Excellence" by the German government. This title comes from the German Universities Excellence Initiative. This program provides funding to promote top-level research and scholarship. LMU received funding for graduate schools, excellence clusters, and a "future concept."
