Llywelyn wanted to bring many Welsh lands together under his rule. He grew up during a time of great change. His family had deep roots in the land. His father was Gruffudd ap Llywelyn. His grandfather was the famous Llywelyn ab Iorwerth. Llywelyn had to work hard to find his place in this world.

Llywelyn became the sole ruler of his lands through many steps. First, he had to fight his own brothers, Owain and Dafydd. This happened in June 1255 at the Battle of Bryn Derwin. Llywelyn won that fight and became the leader of Gwynedd Uwch Conwy.

After that, he began to win more land. He led his army across the River Conwy in 1256. He also fought in the Battle of Cadfan in 1257. These victories helped him grow his power across Wales.

Llywelyn's power reached its highest point in the year 1267. This happened because of the Treaty of Montgomery.

King Henry III of England recognized Llywelyn as the Prince of Wales. This was a very big deal for the Welsh people. Llywelyn even made an alliance with Simon de Montfort. He offered 25,000 marks to help keep the peace. This treaty made him the most important leader in Wales.

However, life became very difficult after King Henry III died. A new king named Edward I took the throne in England. Edward and Llywelyn did not get along at all. Llywelyn struggled to pay the money promised in the treaty. He also faced a plot against his life in 1274. His own brother, Dafydd, was part of a plan to kill him. A heavy snowstorm actually stopped the attack from happening that day.

In the end, the struggle for Wales changed forever. King Edward I declared Llywelyn a rebel in 1276. The Treaty of Aberconwy took much of Llywelyn's land away.

Llywelyn ap Gruffudd was a powerful Welsh leader from the 13th century. He is often called Llywelyn the Last. He served as the Prince of Gwynedd, a region in North Wales, from 1255 until his death in 1282. Llywelyn worked to unite various Welsh territories under a single authority. His life was defined by constant political maneuvering and military conflict. He sought to establish a stable principality amidst the competing interests of Welsh lords and the English Crown.

Llywelyn’s rise to power began with internal family struggles. He was the second son of Gruffudd ap Llywelyn. After his father's death, his uncle Dafydd ap Llywelyn ruled Gwynedd. Llywelyn eventually faced his own brothers, Owain and Dafydd, for control. In June 1255, they fought at the Battle of Bryn Derwin. Llywelyn won this battle and captured his brothers. This victory made him the sole ruler of Gwynedd Uwch Conwy, the lands west of the River Conwy.

After securing his home territory, Llywelyn began an aggressive expansion. In 1256, he led an army across the River Conwy. He took control of the Perfeddwlad, also known as the middle land. In June 1257, his forces won a major victory at the Battle of Cadfan. This battle defeated an English army led by Stephen Bauzan. Llywelyn also pushed into Gwrtheyrnion and Powys. He even extended his influence into South Wales. These campaigns helped him gain many new followers and lands.

Llywelyn’s political influence grew through strategic alliances. In 1265, he formed a partnership with Simon de Montfort. De Montfort was a leader fighting in the Second Barons' War in England. Llywelyn offered 25,000 marks to secure peace through the Treaty of Pipton. This alliance gave Llywelyn a much stronger bargaining position. He used his military successes to force the English Crown to listen. Eventually, these efforts led to his greatest political achievement.

The Treaty of Montgomery in 1267 marked the peak of his power. King Henry III of England officially recognized Llywelyn as the Prince of Wales. This treaty meant that most Welsh princes had to swear loyalty to him. To secure this recognition, Llywelyn had to pay the English crown 24,000 marks in installments. He also had the option to buy the loyalty of Maredudd ap Rhys for 5,000 marks. This period saw Llywelyn acting as a true sovereign over much of Wales.

However, this era of stability was short-lived. After Henry III died, King Edward I took the throne. Relations between the two leaders quickly soured. Llywelyn struggled to make the large payments required by the treaty. He also faced a betrayal from his brother, Dafydd. In 1274, a plot was made to kill Llywelyn. A heavy snowstorm actually prevented the assassins from arriving on February 2. Despite this, the tension between Wales and England continued to rise.

Edward I eventually took direct military action against Llywelyn. In 1276, the King declared Llywelyn a rebel. The resulting Treaty of Aberconwy significantly reduced Llywelyn's territory. He remained the Prince of Wales in name, but his actual power was gone. The English conquest of Wales continued through 1282. Llywelyn was killed at Cilmeri in December of that year. His death marked the end of an era for independent Welsh rule.
