This allowed the whale to cut large portions of flesh. Some teeth reached lengths of over 36 centimeters.

In November 2008, researcher Klaas Post found a partially preserved skull. This specimen is the holotype, which is the single specimen used to describe a species. The name Livyatan comes from the Hebrew name for a biblical sea monster. The species name melvillei honors the author Herman Melville. Melville wrote the famous novel Moby-Dick about a giant sperm whale. Scientists originally wanted to name it Leviathan melvillei. However, that name was already used for a type of mastodon. They created the new genus name Livyatan to fix this.

Livyatan lived during the Miocene epoch. Most fossils come from the Tortonian stage, about 9.9 to 8.9 million years ago.

However, isolated teeth found elsewhere suggest a much wider range. Teeth found in Australia and South Africa date to the Pliocene, around 5 million years ago. A large tooth found in Australia was nicknamed the "Beaumaris sperm whale." In California, a tooth was found that suggests the whale lived in the Capistrano Formation. These finds imply that Livyatan may have had a global presence. It was not restricted to the Southern Hemisphere.

The size of Livyatan was truly massive. Experts estimate its body length could reach up to 17.5 meters.

This makes it comparable to the modern sperm whale, Physeter macrocephalus. Based on skull width, some estimates suggest it weighed around 50 tons. This large size was likely an adaptation for hunting and protection. It may have competed for food with the extinct shark Otodus megalodon.

Both predators likely hunted similar marine life in the same environments.

Ultimately, Livyatan went extinct. This likely happened due to a cooling event at the end of the Miocene. This change in temperature caused a reduction in food populations. When there was less to eat, these massive predators could not survive. The Pisco Formation in Peru preserves many other fossils from this time. It contains a large assemblage of sharks and other marine mammals. Studying these connections helps us see how the entire ocean system changed. We can see how one change in temperature affects every level of life.
