It is a public ritual that helps people connect with the divine. Through these actions, people might show praise or give thanks. They might also remember important things or ask for help. Some people use liturgy to express repentance. It is more than just a simple prayer. It is a communal response to what is sacred. This shared activity helps build a relationship with God.

How a liturgy works depends on the faith.

In Buddhism, a service might happen at home or in a temple. People often chant sutras or recite mantras. They may also use gathas during their worship. It is common to make offerings of light, water, or food. In Islam, the prayer is called Salat. This is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. Muslims often wash themselves before they pray. They repeat specific actions and words in units called rakʻa.

The word liturgy has a very old history. It comes from the ancient Greek word leitourgia. This term means "work or service for the people."

In ancient Greece, wealthy people paid for services to help their city. These were often expensive gifts to the state. By the 3rd century AD, these duties became a type of tax. In Rome, these obligations were called munera. They included things like repairing bridges or feeding troops. Some people even paid to support warships.

Many different traditions have their own specific rules. In Judaism, people use a prayer book called a siddur. Men often pray three times a day at set times. Communal prayer usually needs a group of ten adults called a minyan. There are morning, afternoon, and night prayers.

In Christianity, liturgy often follows a set order of events. Some churches use a formal script for their services. Others have services that are not scripted or are improvised. Even Quakers have a form of liturgy called the "liturgy of silence."

Liturgy connects people to their history and their community. It is a way to keep ancient traditions alive today. Whether it is a large festival or a quiet moment, it is a shared experience. For many, it is a way to participate in a larger work. Some see it as a way to join in the work of God. It brings people together under one shared purpose. This makes the act of worship a truly public event.

By participating in these rites, followers aim to establish a relationship with the divine. Technically, liturgy is a subset of ritual. It refers to a formal ritual enacted by those participating in an action with the divine. This shared participation transforms individual belief into a collective experience.

The term liturgy has a deep history rooted in ancient Greece. It comes from the Greek word leitourgia. This term is a combination of two parts. The first part, leitos, comes from laos, meaning people or public. The second part, ergon, means work or service. Therefore, liturgy literally translates to "work or service for the people."

In its original context, it described expensive offerings made by wealthy Greeks. These offerings served the polis, or city-state, and the state at large.

In ancient Greece, these liturgical duties were often assigned by the state. Wealthy citizens carried the financial burden of these services. In exchange, they were often rewarded with prestige and honors. In Athens, there were at least 97 liturgical appointments for festivals. During a Panathenaic year, this number rose to 118. These assignments could include subsidizing civic amenities or even warships.

Eventually, under Roman rule, these obligations became known as munera. These were often viewed as a ruinous and expensive burden. Munera included repairing bridges, aqueducts, and highways, or feeding troops in transit.

Different religions have developed unique mechanisms for their liturgical practices. In Buddhism, liturgy is a formalized service of veneration. This occurs within a Sangha, which is a religious community. It can be performed at a temple or at home.

The practice often involves chanting sutras or reciting mantras. Practitioners may also use gathas. These services are usually performed in front of objects of veneration. They are often accompanied by offerings of light, incense, water, and food.

In Islam, the compulsory prayer is known as Salat. This practice is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. Salat is distinct from dua, which refers to supplication. Before praying, Muslims perform a ritual ablution, which is a washing. The prayer consists of repeating units called rak'ah. The number of obligatory rak'at varies from two to four depending on the time. For example, Friday congregational worship involves two rakats. This prayer is required for most Muslims, except those who are prepubescent or in certain stages of womanhood.

Judaism also utilizes structured liturgical prayer recitations. These are often found in a traditional prayer book called a siddur. Communal prayer requires a quorum of ten adults, known as a minyan.

There are typically three daily services: Shacharit in the morning, Mincha in the afternoon, and Arvit at night. Some traditions include Musaf, which is recited on Shabbat or holidays. On Yom Kippur, a fifth service called Ne'ila is performed. In Rabbinic Judaism, men are generally obligated to pray three times a day within specific time ranges called zmanim.

Christianity often uses the term to describe a standardized order of events. This can include sacramental services or services of public prayer. Some traditions distinguish between liturgical and non-liturgical churches. Non-liturgical churches may use unscripted or improvised services. However, some argue this distinction ignores the universal nature of public worship. Even Quakers practice a "liturgy of silence" by waiting for the Holy Spirit. In many traditions, a designated liturgist leads the service. This person may be an ordained minister or a lay person.

Liturgy connects the individual to the broader structures of society and faith. It links historical traditions to modern communal life. Whether through the formal rites of a bishop or the quiet chanting of a monk, it remains a central religious phenomenon. It functions as both a duty for the faithful and a service provided to them. This reciprocal relationship defines how many groups interact with the sacred.
