The Liopleurodon was a large sea reptile. 

Liopleurodon had a very long head. It also had a short neck. It used four flippers to swim through the water. It was an ambush predator. This means it would hide and then strike. It ate fish and other sea reptiles. 
Scientists found many fossils in Europe. They found some in Mexico too. Most fossils come from England and France. Some parts were found in Germany. A long time ago, people thought it was much bigger. One TV show said it was very giant. However, studies show it was a different size. It could reach many meters in length. One tooth used to name the species is very important. It is called a holotype. This is the single specimen used to describe the animal. Scientists still study these bones to learn more.

It combines *leios*, meaning "smooth"; *pleura*, meaning "side" or "rib"; and *odon*, meaning "tooth." This name describes the animal's unique dentition. 
Physically, *Liopleurodon* possessed a very distinct body plan. Like other plesiosaurs, it had four flippers used for swimming. It also had a short tail to assist with movement. Most pliosaurids, including this genus, featured a long head and a short neck. 

Taxonomy, or the naming of species, has been complex for this genus. The type species is *L. ferox*, which is likely the only valid species. The specific name *ferox* comes from Latin, meaning "fierce." This refers to the large size of its teeth. 

The history of discovering *Liopleurodon* involves many different scientists and specimens. In 1838, Hermann von Meyer described a tooth named *Ischyrodon meriani*. While it might belong to *Liopleurodon*, there is not enough information to be sure. In 1873, Henri Émile Sauvage officially coined the genus name *Liopleurodon*. He based his classification on three different teeth. The holotype tooth for *L. ferox* was found in Le Wast, near Boulogne-sur-Mer. This tooth, numbered BHN 3R 197, is kept in the Lille Natural History Museum. 
Fossil evidence for *Liopleurodon* is found in several locations around the world. Most specimens are known from Europe, particularly England and France. Fossils have also been found in Germany. One occurrence of these fossils was reported in Mexico in the Sabinal Formation. Much of our detailed knowledge comes from the Leeds Collection. Alfred Leeds and his brother Charles collected many important specimens. They found not just teeth, but also skulls and much of the postcranial skeleton. These finds helped scientists move beyond just studying single teeth to understanding the whole animal.
There has been much discussion regarding the actual size of *Liopleurodon*. In 1999, a BBC documentary called *Walking with Dinosaurs* greatly exaggerated its size. However, scientific studies of different specimens show a more realistic range. Some researchers estimate a maximum length of approximately 5 to 7 meters.
The study of *Liopleurodon* connects to the broader field of paleontology and evolutionary biology. By analyzing the teeth and vertebrae, scientists can trace how marine reptiles evolved. For example, the study of the mandibular symphysis—the part where the lower jaws meet—helped distinguish *Liopleurodon* from *Pliosaurus*.
