Large machines like planes or spacecraft need many parts. Some parts are made to be swapped very fast. We call these line-replaceable units, or LRUs.

If an LRU breaks, workers do not fix it on the plane. They simply pull the old unit out. Then, they put a new one in. This helps the machine get back to work quickly. The broken part is sent away to a special shop. There, experts can perform a hard repair.

Some LRUs are parts of other LRUs. We call these smaller parts lower line-replaceable units, or LLRRUs. An LLRRU is like a child to the parent LRU.

LRUs are built to fit perfectly. They use standard sizes so different brands can work together. Many LRUs have handles to help people carry them. Some even use special plugs that do not need tools. This makes the swap very fast. These units must also stay safe in heat or cold. They must also resist things like dust or shaking. This way, the machine stays ready to fly.
