Line integral

math Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Imagine you are walking along a winding path. You want to know the total effect of something along that path. In math, we use a line integral to find this answer.

Line integral of scalar field
Line integral of scalar field

A line integral adds up values along a curve. One way to use it is with a scalar field. This is a field of numbers. You can think of it as a shape above your path. The integral finds the area of a curtain made by that shape.

Line integral of vector field

Another way is to use a vector field. A vector field uses arrows to show direction and strength. A line integral can measure the total work done on an object. For example, it can show work done by gravity or electric fields. If the field is special, the path does not matter. We call this path independence. It only depends on where you start and end. This math helps us understand how things move in the world.
