One small area called Voeren is actually detached from the rest of the province. It sits between the Netherlands and the province of Liège.

The history of this land goes back thousands of years. Very early farmers arrived in the southern Haspengouw area around 5000 BC. Later, people from the Bronze Age brought new ways of living. Around 2000 BC, new languages and technologies moved into Europe from the east. Julius Caesar wrote about the people living here in 55 BC. He called them the Germani cisrhenani.

In the Middle Ages, the region was known as the County of Loon. This area was often ruled by the Prince-Bishopric of Liège. During the 9th century, the land was part of the Frankish empire. This was a large group of lands that ruled much of Western Europe. The Vikings also traveled through the area. They used the Maas river as a base during the years 881 and 882. Over time, many different kings and leaders claimed this territory. The land saw many changes as empires rose and fell.

The name "Limburg" was not used for this specific area until the 19th century. Before that, it was mostly known as the County of Loon. After the French ruled the area, the Kingdom of the Netherlands was formed. The Dutch king chose the name Limburg to honor an old title. However, the Belgian Revolution in 1830 changed things again. In 1839, the Treaty of London split the region into two parts. The western part became part of the Kingdom of Belgium. The eastern part stayed with the Netherlands.

The history of this region began with early waves of farming. Around 5000 BC, the LBK culture brought farming and pottery to the fertile Haspengouw area. Later, the Michelsburg culture arrived around 3500 BC. However, it was the Urnfield culture in the Bronze Age, around 1200 BC, that made the area permanently agricultural. During this time, Indo-European languages likely arrived from the direction of Ukraine and southern Russia. These migrations brought new technologies and linguistic shifts to the entire continent. These early movements set the stage for the complex societies that followed.

Roman influence left a lasting mark on the landscape. In 55 BC, Julius Caesar provided the first written description of the area. He referred to the local people as the Germani cisrhenani. Some groups, such as the Eburones, fought against Caesar's forces. Under Roman rule, the region became the civitas, or administrative district, of the Tungri. The Romans established the city of Aduatuca Tungrorum. This settlement eventually became the modern city of Tongeren.

During the Middle Ages, the territory was largely defined by the County of Loon. This county was part of the powerful Prince-Bishopric of Liège. In the 9th century, the region was part of the Frankish empire. This empire was ruled by the Carolingian dynasty. However, the area faced many challenges during this time. Vikings plundered the lands along the Maas and Haspengouw rivers around 881 and 882. Over the following centuries, the region was part of various kingdoms, including Lotharingia. It eventually came under the control of the Holy Roman Empire.

The modern name "Limburg" is a relatively recent development. In the late 18th century, the region was part of the French Lower Meuse Department. After Napoleon's defeat, the Congress of Vienna in 1815 created the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. The Dutch monarchy chose the name "Limburg" to recreate the prestige of the extinct Duchy of Limburg. This name was applied to the whole province, even though the actual Duchy was elsewhere. The Belgian Revolution of 1830 led to further changes. In 1839, the Treaty of London divided the province. The western portion became part of the Kingdom of Belgium. The eastern portion remained part of the Netherlands.

The province remains a key part of the Flemish landscape, blending ancient Roman roots with modern Belgian life. It continues to be defined by its river borders and its historical connection to the lands of the former Counts of Loon.
