Lignin is a very important material in many plants. It is found in wood and bark.

This material helps plants stay stiff and strong. It also helps them move water. Lignin fills spaces in the cell walls. These walls are the tiny parts around a cell. Most parts of a cell wall love water. But lignin is hydrophobic, which means it does not like water. This helps the plant move water through its stems more easily.

Lignin is made of many small parts called polymers. These parts link together in a complex way. This makes the plant hard to rot. It can even help a plant fight off germs.

People use wood to make paper in large mills. To make white paper, workers must remove the lignin. If they leave it in, the paper turns yellow over time. Sometimes, people burn the extra lignin for fuel. This gives power to the paper mill. Lignin is one of the most common organic materials on Earth.
