Li Qingzhao was a legendary Chinese poet and essayist of the Song dynasty. She is widely considered one of the greatest poets in Chinese history. Her work is famous for its emotional depth and technical skill. She mastered two distinct poetic forms: shi and ci. Shi poetry follows strict structural rules and often addresses public themes like history. In contrast, ci poetry follows musical patterns. This form allows for more personal expression regarding love and longing. Li is credited with the first detailed critique of Chinese poetic metrics. She is recognized as a master of the "subtle and concise style," known in Chinese as wanyuepai.
Li was born in 1084 in Qi Prefecture, located in modern-day Shandong province. She grew up in a highly educated household of scholar-officials. Her father, Li Gefei, was a famous professor and essayist. Her mother was also a renowned poet. This environment provided Li with a comprehensive education in literature. By her teenage years, she possessed an in-depth understanding of many texts. She began her career by writing shi poems to rhyme with a friend's work. Her early poems often reflected a sharp mind and a deep love of nature.
At age eighteen, Li married Zhao Mingcheng, a man who shared her passions. They both loved literature, painting, and calligraphy. They also shared an interest in collecting bronze and stone sculptures. The couple spent much of their time studying inscriptions from the Shang and Zhou dynasties. They frequently wrote poems for one another to express their connection. During this period, Li's poetic style was calm and elegant. Her writing captured the carefree days of a woman in high society. This era of her life is often viewed as a time of marital bliss.
This peace ended due to the Jin-Song wars between the Song dynasty and the Jurchens. In 1127, the Northern Song capital of Kaifeng fell to the invaders. Fighting reached Shandong, where Li's home was burned down. Li and Zhao were forced to flee south of the Yangtze River. They carried many of their precious collections during this difficult journey. They lived in Nanjing for one year during their flight. However, the struggle took a heavy toll on their lives and their possessions.
In 1129, Zhao died of typhoid fever while traveling to an official post. Li never fully recovered from this loss. She wandered aimlessly for a time before settling in Hangzhou. Hangzhou had become the new capital for the Song government. During these later years, her poetry underwent a significant change in tone. Her work became filled with nostalgia for her husband and her lost home. She also worked to complete the "Catalogue of Inscriptions on Metal and Stone." This book documented the calligraphy on the bronze and stone items they had collected.
Only about one hundred of Li's poems are known to have survived to the present day. Most of these surviving works are in the ci form. They trace the varying fortunes of her life through different stages. Her early period focuses on the feelings of a maiden, often resembling love poems. Her later period is linked to her patriotism and her hatred of the war. Some of her most famous works, like "A Dream Song," were written when she was between 16 and 17 years old. These poems help historians understand the massive cultural shifts caused by the war.

The Qingzhao Garden in Shandong covers 18,000 square meters of land and water. Her influence even extends into modern science and space exploration.
