It sits within the region of Wallonia, where people mostly speak French. This province is very unique because it is the only one in Belgium that borders three different countries. To the north, it touches the Dutch province of Limburg. To the east, it meets the German states of North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate. It also shares a border with the Luxembourgish canton of Clervaux.

The province is divided into many smaller parts to help people manage the land. It is split into four administrative districts called arrondissements. Within these districts, there are 84 different municipalities, which are like small towns or local areas.

Some of these places are part of the German-speaking Community of Belgium. Nine municipalities, such as Eupen and Sankt Vith, belong to this group. Other areas, like Malmedy and Waimes, allow people to use both French and German. This mix of languages shows how diverse the province is.

Liège has a very long and busy history. The modern borders we see today began to form around 1795. During the time of Napoleon, the area was under French control. Napoleon even visited the city of Liège during one of his campaigns. He ordered the destruction of local vineyards to protect French wine makers. Later, in 1830, people in Liège helped work toward Belgian independence. A militia led by a man named Charlier "Wooden Leg" helped push for this change.

In the 1800s, the province became a major center for the Industrial Revolution. It had huge deposits of coal and many steel factories. These resources helped the region grow very strong and wealthy. However, the 20th century brought difficult times because of two World Wars. Because Liège sits near the German border, it saw fierce fighting. During World War I, strong concrete forts helped stop some German advances. Later, during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II, intense battles took place in places like Malmedy.

Today, Liège is still a very important part of Wallonia. It serves as a center for culture and learning because of its university. While the heavy steel industry has slowed down, it is still the last city in Wallonia to have a working steel industry. The land is also shaped by many flowing rivers. The Meuse is one of the main rivers that moves through the province. Other rivers include the Ourthe, the Berwinne, and the Jeker.

Within these districts, there are 84 different municipalities. The province is also linguistically diverse due to its borders. Nine municipalities belong to the German-speaking Community of Belgium. These include locations such as Eupen, Bütgenbach, and Sankt Vith. Other areas, like Malmedy and Waimes, provide language facilities for German speakers. The remaining municipalities are part of the French Community of Belgium.

The modern structure of Liège began to take shape in 1795. During this time, the Principality of the Prince-Bishopric of Liège unified with the French Department of the Ourthe.

This occurred during the era of French revolutionary expansion. During his reign, Napoleon Bonaparte visited the city of Liège. He famously ordered the destruction of local vineyards. He did this to ensure the Liège wine industry did not compete with French producers. After Napoleon fell from power in 1815, the region changed hands again. Liège became part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, while parts of Verviers joined the Kingdom of Prussia.

Political shifts continued as the region moved toward Belgian independence. In September 1830, rumors of a revolt in Brussels spread through the province. Intellectuals in Liège contacted Walloon scholars in Paris to discuss the movement. A militia was formed to demand independence. This group was led by a man known as Charlier "Wooden Leg." Their efforts eventually led to the creation of the independent Kingdom of Belgium. The province also grew through later treaties. In 1925, the East Cantons and Neutral Moresnet were absorbed into Liège following the Treaty of Versailles.

During the 19th century, Liège became a powerhouse of the Industrial Revolution. The region possessed rich coal deposits and many steel factories. These resources provided the economic foundation for Belgium's growing strength. However, the 20th century brought significant conflict due to its proximity to Germany. In World War I, the province's reinforced concrete military forts helped slow the German advance. This provided time to build trenches in Flanders. The province also suffered heavy civilian casualties during this period. In World War II, Liège was a major site of the Battle of the Bulge.

This was a final German offensive against the Allied armies. Intense fighting occurred in Malmedy and Saint-Vith, including a massacre of U.S. Army prisoners of war.

Economically, the province remains a major contributor to the Belgian state. In 2018, the Gross domestic product (GDP) of the province was 31.6 billion €. This amount accounted for 6.9% of the total economic output of Belgium. The GDP per person employed was 108% of the EU27 average. While heavy industry has declined since the 1960s, the region maintains a specialized economy. Liège is notable for being the last city in Wallonia to operate a functioning steel industry. It remains an important economic and cultural hub due to its university and medieval heritage.

The natural landscape of the province is defined by its many waterways. Several rivers flow through the territory, shaping the geography over time. The Meuse is a primary river in the region. Other important rivers include the Ourthe, the Berwinne, and the Jeker. The Ambiève and the Roannay also flow through the area.
