Leucine is a very important part of life. It is an essential amino acid used to build proteins. This means your body cannot make it on its own.

You must get it from the food you eat every day. It belongs to a group called branched-chain amino acids. This name describes its shape, which is not a straight line. Because it is essential, it is a key part of a healthy diet.

Leucine works in a very specific way inside your cells. It helps start the process of building new proteins. It does this by activating a part of the cell called mTOR. This mTOR acts like a switch for cell growth.

Leucine also helps create energy through a process called ketogenesis. It is one of only two amino acids that are exclusively ketogenic. This means it turns into specific things like acetyl-CoA. These pieces help your body manage its energy.

Scientists and experts have studied leucine for a long time. The name comes from the Greek word "leukos," which means white. This is because leucine often looks like a white powder. In 2002, the Food and Nutrition Board set important rules for it. They created Recommended Dietary Allowances for adults. For people 19 years or older, the amount is 42 mg per kg of body weight. This helps people know how much they need to stay healthy.

There are many different ways to find leucine in food.

You can find high amounts in whey protein concentrate. It has about 10.0 to 12.0 grams per 100 grams. Soy protein concentrate is also a great source. Roasted, salted soybeans have about 2.87 grams per 100 grams. You can also find it in beef, fish, and chicken. Even things like peanuts, oats, and lentils have it. Some foods like rice and human milk have much smaller amounts.

Leucine connects to many things you might already know. It is used as a food additive called E641. In this form, it works as a flavor enhancer. Scientists also look at how it affects muscles and health. For example, it might help slow muscle loss in aged rats. However, studies on healthy elderly men show mixed results. It is also studied for how it affects things like seizures in mice. Understanding leucine helps us understand how our bodies grow and work.
