The Hydra was a famous lake monster. It lived in the lake of Lerna. This monster was a large snake with many heads. Some stories say it had nine heads. Other stories say it had fifty heads! The Hydra was very dangerous. Its breath and its blood were both poisonous.

A hero named Heracles had to fight it. This was his second big task. The Hydra had a special power. If you cut off one head, more would grow back. For every head lost, two new heads grew. Heracles asked his nephew, Iolaus, for help. They used fire to burn the neck stumps. This stopped the new heads from growing.

Heracles won the fight. He used a golden sword to cut the last head. He also used the poison for his arrows. People in ancient times saw the Hydra in the stars. It is now a constellation in the night sky. The goddess Hera also put a crab in the stars. We call that constellation Cancer.
