As a soprano, she possessed a high and powerful voice. She was the first African-American soprano to achieve international fame. Her career was marked by many historic milestones. She became the first Black singer to hold a long-term relationship with the Metropolitan Opera. This connection lasted for 20 years, making her a central figure in 20th-century music.

Price's musical foundation was built in Laurel, Mississippi. She was born there on February 10, 1927. Her parents, James and Katherine Price, were deeply religious people. Her mother was a nurse and a soloist in their church choir. Her father worked in timber and played the tuba in the church band. Price began piano lessons at age three and a half. By age five, her parents traded a phonograph for an upright piano. She studied both piano and voice with Hattie McInnis for over twelve years.

Her education prepared her for the global stage. She graduated from the State College of Education and Industrial Arts in 1948. Following this, she attended the Juilliard School from 1948 to 1952. There, she trained as a soprano under Florence Kimball. Price and Kimball formed a bond that lasted until Kimball's death in 1977. Price also studied at the Fontainebleau School while performing in Paris. These years of intense study helped her master complex musical works.

Price's professional rise involved several key roles and collaborations. In 1952, she starred as Bess in George Gershwin's *Porgy and Bess*. This production toured the United States and Europe. During this time, she married her co-star, the bass-baritone William Warfield. She also formed a lasting bond with composer Samuel Barber. In 1953, she performed the world premiere of his *Hermit Songs*. Barber actually accompanied her on the piano during these performances.

In 1955, Price broke a major social barrier in the arts. She became the first African American to star in a televised opera. She performed the title role in Puccini's *Tosca* for the NBC Opera Theatre. This event helped end the era when Black singers were often barred from opera stages. This success led to her first contract with the San Francisco Opera in 1957. She soon began performing at the world's most prestigious venues. These included the Vienna State Opera, the Royal Opera House, and La Scala.

Music experts often debate how to classify Price's unique voice. While she called herself a lyric soprano, others called her a dramatic soprano. Many scholars use her as the primary example of a "spinto" soprano. In Italian, *lirico spinto* means "pushed lyric." This voice type exists in the space between lyric and dramatic styles. Her ability to navigate this range allowed her to excel in many different roles. She was especially famous for her performances in operas by Giuseppe Verdi. Her portrayal of the title character in *Aida* became her greatest triumph.

Price's legacy is cemented by many prestigious awards and honors. She received 13 Grammy Awards throughout her career. In 1964, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Even after retiring from opera, she performed in concerts until 1998. She later returned for a special memorial concert at Carnegie Hall in 2001. This concert honored the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Her life remains a testament to skill, perseverance, and musical excellence.
