Leonard Wood was a man who wore many different hats. He was a doctor, a soldier, and a leader in the government.

He was born in Winchester, New Hampshire, on October 9, 1860. His family had roots that went back to the Mayflower passengers. After losing his father and sister, Wood worked hard to study. A kind man named H. H. Hunnewell helped pay for his medical school. Wood attended Harvard Medical School and earned his degree in 1884.

Wood's career in the military began with medicine. He joined the Army Medical Corps to find steady work. In 1885, he began working as a surgeon in Arizona. He was very brave during the Apache Wars in 1886. One time, he carried important messages 70 miles in a single night. He also led a group of soldiers when their officers were gone. Because of these brave acts, he was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1898.

War changed Wood's path from a doctor to a leader. During the Spanish-American War, he helped organize the Rough Riders. This was a volunteer group of cavalry soldiers. Theodore Roosevelt served as his second-in-command during this time. Wood rose to the rank of brigadier general. He led his troops to a big victory at San Juan Hill.

After the war, he served as the military governor of Cuba. There, he used his medical knowledge to improve health and schools.

Wood held many important jobs in the years that followed. In 1910, President William Howard Taft made him the Army Chief of Staff. He held this high position until 1914. He also served in the Philippines during the Philippine-American War. In 1903, he was promoted to the rank of major general. This promotion was a big deal, even though some people in the Senate disagreed with it.

He also spent time as the governor of the Moro Province.

In his later years, Wood became involved in politics. Many people who liked Theodore Roosevelt supported Wood in 1920. He tried to become the Republican candidate for president. He received many votes, but the party chose Warren G. Harding instead. Wood retired from the Army in 1921. Later that year, he went to the Philippines to be the Governor-General. He stayed in that role until he died in 1927.
