One of his most famous jobs was writing a book called Movie Guide. He started publishing this guide in 1969. The book contains short reviews, or capsule reviews, of many different films. In 2005, he created a separate book for older films called the Classic Movie Guide. He also worked on television for a very long time. From 1982 to 2012, he was the film reviewer on the show Entertainment Tonight. He shared his opinions with millions of viewers every day for 30 years.

Maltin's love for movies started when he was a very young boy. He began writing for a magazine when he was only 10 years old. At age 15, he became the editor of a Canadian magazine called Film Fan Monthly. He bought the publication for $175. He grew the number of readers from 400 to 2,000 people in 11 different countries. He later earned a journalism degree from New York University. This early start helped him become a professional expert on film history.

Throughout his career, Maltin has worked in many different places. He has been a professor at the USC School of Cinematic Arts since 1998. He also hosted a weekly podcast called Maltin on Movies with his daughter, Jessie. He has appeared in movies himself, such as the film Gremlins 2: The New Batch. He even held leadership roles, like serving as President of the Los Angeles Film Critics Association. In 2022, he received the Robert Osborne Award from Turner Classic Movies.

Maltin's life is deeply connected to the world of entertainment. He has worked with big names like George Lucas and the Walt Disney Company. He even helped create a special line of Disney DVDs. Some people even joke about his reviews on shows like The Simpsons. He is even listed in the Guinness Book of World Records. He holds a record for the shortest movie review ever written.
