Leif Erikson was a prominent Norse explorer from the Viking Age. He is widely believed to be the first European to reach continental North America. This occurred roughly 500 years before Christopher Columbus arrived in the Americas.

Most of what we know comes from the Icelandic sagas. These are long prose narratives written around the year 1200. Scholars study these sagas to understand the history of the Norse people. While some details are debated, Leif remains a significant historical figure. He is often called "Leif the Lucky" due to his successful voyages.

Leif's early life was shaped by his family's history of exile. His father was Erik the Red, a man who founded the first Norse settlement in Greenland. Erik had been banished from Norway for manslaughter. The family then moved to Iceland, where Leif was likely born. Leif grew up on the family estate, Brattahlíð, in Greenland's Eastern Settlement. He was raised alongside his siblings, Thorstein, Thorvald, and Freydís. A trusted man named Tyrker acted as his foster father.

There are two main versions of how Leif discovered Vinland. The Saga of Erik the Red says a storm blew him off course. He was traveling from Norway to Greenland to spread Christianity. During this storm, his crew landed on an unknown shore. They found wild grapes, wheat, and maple trees. They also rescued shipwrecked sailors on their return trip. This rescue and his religious work earned him his famous nickname.

The Saga of the Greenlanders offers a different account of the discovery. It suggests a man named Bjarni Herjólfsson saw the coast first. Bjarni was blown off course while sailing from Iceland to Greenland. He saw the unknown land but did not land there. About 15 years later, Leif purchased Bjarni's ship. He gathered a crew of 35 men to find the land. Leif then followed Bjarni's route in reverse to explore it.

Leif's expedition encountered several distinct types of terrain. First, they reached a rocky, desolate place called Helluland. This may have been Baffin Island or northern Labrador. Next, they found a forested area called Markland. Finally, they reached a verdant area with a mild climate. This region had plentiful salmon and wild grapes. Tyrker discovered the grapes, so Leif named the area Vinland, or "Wineland." They built a small settlement there called Leifsbudir.

Archaeological evidence supports the existence of these Norse voyages. In the early 1960s, Helge and Anne Stine Ingstad found a Norse site. This site is located at the northern tip of Newfoundland, Canada. It is known as L'Anse aux Meadows. Scientists used carbon dating and tree-ring analysis to study it. The data shows the site was occupied around the year 1021. This confirms that Norsemen reached North America 500 years before Columbus.

Leif's leadership continued after his father's death around 1000 CE. He became the paramount chief of the Greenland settlement. He was known as a wise, strong, and considerate leader. He had two sons, Thorgils and Thorkell. Thorkell eventually succeeded him as the chieftain of Greenland. While Leif did not return to Vinland, his voyages inspired others. These expeditions led to sporadic Norse visits to the North American coast. His legacy connects the history of Europe to the history of the Americas.
