It is called Leaves of Grass. He started this work in 1855. He spent most of his life adding to it. The first book was very slim. It had only twelve poems. It was small enough to fit in a pocket. Whitman wanted people to read his poems in the open air.

He wrote about nature and the human body. He also wrote about American democracy. His poems do not usually rhyme. This was a new way to write. Some people thought his work was too bold. They even mocked him for it. But his poems became very important to American art.

By his death in 1892, the book had grown a lot. The last version had over 400 poems. It was a very large book. He called this final version his "deathbed edition." He worked on these poems through many years of peace and war.
