Lawrence Hargrave was a great inventor from England. 

In 1894, Lawrence did a big test. He went to Stanwell Park beach. He used four box kites tied together. The wind was blowing at 21 mph. The kites lifted Lawrence sixteen feet up! 
Lawrence did not want to make money from his ideas. He did not use patents. A patent is a way to own an invention. He wanted to share his work with others. He hoped this would help people build real planes. His work helped many people design early aircraft. He even worked on a rotary engine. This is a type of engine that spins. It helped power many early flying machines.

His personal life saw both great discovery and great loss. Hargrave was born in Greenwich, England, in 1850. He immigrated to Australia with his family in 1865. He arrived in Sydney on the ship La Hogue. He later moved to Stanwell Park to focus on his research. He lived there because the area offered excellent wind and hang conditions. In 1915, his son Geoffrey was killed at the Battle of Gallipoli during World War I. Later that year, Hargrave died following an operation for appendicitis. He suffered from peritonitis and was buried in Waverley Cemetery.
Today, the legacy of Lawrence Hargrave is visible in many places.
