Acting is a job that requires a lot of practice. Metcalf learned how to do this at Illinois State University. She earned her degree in theater in 1976. Before she was an actress, she studied German and anthropology. She once worked as a secretary while she was in college. She liked the feeling of finishing her daily tasks. She even found that acting is a way to study how people behave. She started by auditioning for plays in high school. Even though she was very shy, she felt "hooked" by the work. This passion led her to a long and busy career.

Metcalf began her professional journey in Chicago. She was a founding member of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company. This was a very important group for her early growth. In 1984, she performed in a play called Balm in Gilead. This role helped her win an Obie Award for Best Actress. She also received a Theatre World Award for her debut. Later, she moved to New York to perform on Broadway. One of her first big Broadway roles was in the play My Thing of Love in 1995. She has returned to the stage many times since then.

Her career includes many famous names and big projects. She is well known for playing Jackie Harris on the show Roseanne. She won three Emmy Awards for this role between 1992 and 1994. In movies, she played a mother in the film Lady Bird. This role earned her a nomination for an Academy Award. She also used her voice for the Toy Story films. She voiced Andy's mom in movies released from 1995 to 2019. These films were huge successes and made a lot of money. She also voiced Sarah Hawkins in the film Treasure Planet in 2002.

Metcalf's work connects many different worlds of art. She moves easily between a quiet theater and a loud movie set. You might recognize her from the show The Big Bang Theory. In that show, she played Mary Cooper, the mother of Sheldon. Her daughter, Zoe Perry, even played a younger version of that same character. This shows how acting can span across different generations. Whether she is on a screen or a stage, she brings characters to life. Her many awards show how much people value her talent and hard work.
