Imagine a pattern of dots that goes on forever.

SquareLattice
SquareLattice

These dots form a lattice. A lattice is a set of points in a space. The points follow strict rules. First, they stay a minimum distance apart. They never get too close to each other. Second, no part of the space is too far from a dot. Every spot is near a point.

You can make a lattice by using a basis. A basis is a set of starting directions. You can reach any point by following these directions. If you use whole numbers, you get an integer lattice. One easy example is a square lattice.

Oblique Lattice
Oblique Lattice

In two dimensions, there are five main types of lattices. These include square, rectangular, and hexagonal shapes. In three dimensions, there are 14 types. We call these Bravais lattices. Lattices help us understand crystals. They show where atoms sit in a solid. They also help computer scientists. Some ways to hide secrets in computers use lattice math. This is called cryptography. It is hard for computers to solve certain lattice problems. This makes the secrets safe.
