People often called her the "Queen of Melody" or the "Voice of the Millennium." She was a playback singer, which means her voice was recorded for actors to use in movies. She sang in more than thirty-six different Indian languages. Most of her work was in Hindi, Bengali, and Marathi. Her music was a huge part of the Indian film industry for eighty years. She brought a new style to film music that helped singers get more respect.

Lata was very disciplined and took her work very seriously. She always recorded her songs while standing barefoot. She did this because she viewed the recording studio as a temple. She was also a perfectionist in her singing. This meant she would not listen to her own songs after they were released. She said she only wanted to find mistakes in her own voice. To make sure her words sounded perfect, she even hired a teacher to help her with Urdu.

Music was in her family from the very beginning. Her father, Deenanath Mangeshkar, was a classical singer and a theatre actor. He gave Lata her very first music lessons. When she was only five years old, she started acting in musical plays.

Her mother, Yesubai, was also a reputed musician. Lata had several siblings, including her sister Asha Bhosle. Many of her brothers and sisters also became talented musicians. This musical background helped her start her long career.

Lata's career had many important moments and big successes. In 1942, she was only thirteen when her father passed away. A friend named Master Vinayak helped her start her career as a singer. Her first big hit was the song "Dil Mera Toda, Mujhe Kahin Ka Na Chhora" in 1948.

She also became the first Indian playback singer to perform at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 1974. She even appeared in the Guinness World Records as the most recorded artist in history. Her sister Asha Bhosle later took that record.

Because of her talent, Lata received many high honors. In 1989, the Indian government gave her the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. In 2001, she received the Bharat Ratna, which is India's highest civilian honor.
