The first commercial version, called DiscoVision, arrived in the United States in 1978. The first movie released on this format was the film Jaws.
There were different ways the discs could spin during playback. One way is called constant angular velocity, or CAV. 

LaserDisc was not popular everywhere in the world. In North America and Europe, the players were often too expensive. However, the format was very popular in Japan and parts of Southeast Asia. In Hong Kong, it was the main way people rented movies during the 1990s. About 16.8 million players were sold around the world. Pioneer was a major maker and stopped making players in July 2009. Even though DVDs replaced them, some people still collect LaserDiscs today.

The mechanism of a LaserDisc relies on physical patterns etched into the disc surface. These patterns consist of tiny pits and flat areas called lands. 
There were three distinct ways these discs could rotate during playback. The first was Constant Angular Velocity (CAV), also known as Standard Play. In CAV mode, the disc spins at a steady speed, such as 1,800 rpm for NTSC systems. 
The history of this technology began long before the first commercial player. In 1963, David Paul Gregg and James Russell developed a transparent disc-based system. This technology was patented in 1970, and MCA acquired the rights in 1968. Around 1969, Philips developed a different videodisc using reflective technology, which was more advantageous. MCA and Philips began collaborating in the early 1970s and demonstrated the format in 1972. The format was first marketed in the United States in 1978 under the name DiscoVision. The first commercial title released in North America was the film *Jaws* on December 15, 1978. 
Despite its high quality, LaserDisc did not achieve mass-market success in North America or Europe. This was mainly because the players were expensive and the format could not record video. However, it was very successful in other parts of the world. It was significantly more popular in Japan and wealthier regions of Southeast Asia, such as Singapore and Malaysia. In Hong Kong, it became the dominant format for renting videos during the 1990s. In Japan, market penetration reached about 10% of households by 1999. In contrast, only about 2% of U.S. households, or roughly two million people, owned a player. Globally, a total of 16.8 million LaserDisc players were sold, with Pioneer accounting for 9.5 million of those units.
LaserDisc had several notable uses and surprising facts. The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) used the format for the BBC Domesday Project in the mid-1980s. They also used a Sony variant called the CRVdisc to broadcast television idents in the 1990s. The format was a favorite among "videophiles" who wanted the best possible picture and sound. Even as DVDs became popular, some specialized releases continued. For example, the film *Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace* was one of the first to include 6.1 channel Dolby Digital EX Surround in Japan. The very last known LaserDisc release was a Japanese karaoke title called *Onta Station vol. 1018*, issued on March 21, 2007.
The legacy of LaserDisc is found in the evolution of all modern optical media. The concepts of using lasers to read pits and lands on a spinning disc were used to create the CD and the DVD. While the video signal on a LaserDisc was analog, the digital audio technology helped bridge the gap to a fully digital future. The format eventually faded as the DVD became the global standard. Pioneer stopped producing LaserDisc players in July 2009. They continued to provide maintenance services until September 30, 2020, when their parts inventory was finally exhausted. Today, a small community of collectors in the United States and Japan still preserves these large, high-quality discs.
