A man named Gary Starkweather had a great idea at Xerox. He worked in the product development department there. In 1969, he thought about using a laser to draw images. He later moved to the Palo Alto Research Center, or Xerox PARC. In 1972, he worked with Butler Lampson and Ronald Rider. They added a control system to help the machine work better. This work led to the first real laser printers.

Many famous companies helped bring these printers to the world. The IBM 3800 was the first commercial laser printer in 1976. It was used in data centers for high-volume printing. It could print at a speed of 215 pages per minute.

Later, the Xerox 9700 was released in 1977. Canon made a low-cost desktop version in 1979 called the LBP-10. In 1984, HP released the LaserJet for many people to buy. This printer used an engine made by Canon. Apple also released the LaserWriter in 1985. These machines changed how businesses and homes work.

You might see laser printers in many places today. They are ubiquitous, which means they are found almost everywhere. They are much faster and better than older types of printing. In the past, printers were very expensive because memory chips cost a lot. Now, they are much cheaper and can print very clearly. Some printers can print at 1200 dots per inch.

The printing mechanism involves a precise sequence of electrical and physical steps. First, the printer must prepare the photoconductor unit, which is a rotating, cylindrical drum. A primary charge roller or a corona wire applies a uniform negative electrostatic charge to the surface of this drum.

Next, the laser unit directs a beam of light, often from an aluminium gallium arsenide semiconductor, toward the drum. This beam is aimed at a rotating polygonal mirror. This mirror directs the light through lenses to write pixels on the drum at rates up to sixty-five million times per second. As the laser hits the drum, it neutralizes or reverses the negative charge in specific areas. This creates an electrostatic image on the drum's surface.

Once the image is written, the printer begins the developing stage. The drum rotates and comes into contact with a developer roll. This roll carries a layer of toner, which is a powdered ink, that is approximately 15 microns thick. Because the laser has neutralized certain spots on the drum, the toner is electrostatically attracted to those specific areas.

The drum then transfers this toner image onto a sheet of paper through direct contact. Finally, the paper passes through a finisher. This device uses heat to instantly fuse the toner particles to the paper fibers, making the image permanent.

In 1969, Gary Starkweather, an employee in Xerox's product development department, conceived the idea. He realized a laser could "draw" an image directly onto a copier drum. In 1971, he moved to the Palo Alto Research Center. There, he worked with Butler Lampson and Ronald Rider to create a system with a control system and character generator. This collaboration resulted in the EARS printer, which eventually became the Xerox 9700. These early developments paved the way for the commercial printing industry we recognize today.

Commercialization occurred in stages through several major companies. The IBM 3800 was released in 1976 as the first commercial implementation. It was designed for data centers to replace line printers attached to mainframe computers. The IBM 3800 was very fast, achieving speeds of 215 pages per minute (ppm) at a resolution of 240 dots per inch (dpi). In 1977, the Xerox 9700 entered the market, excelling at printing high-value documents like insurance policies on cut-sheet paper. In 1979, Canon developed the LBP-10, which was a low-cost desktop model. Later, in 1984, Hewlett-Packard released the HP LaserJet for the mass market.

Technical complexity in early printing was often tied to memory and software. A raster image processor (RIP) must convert a document's description into a bitmap. This bitmap is stored in the printer's raster memory. Laser printers must render an entire page in one continuous process to avoid a buffer underrun. This requires significant memory. For example, at 300 dots per inch (dpi), a single monochrome letter-sized page requires about 1 megabyte of memory. In color printing, where four CMYK toner layers are used, at least 4 megabytes are needed for a single page at 300 dpi. Because memory chips were expensive in the 1980s, early printers had very high retail prices. As memory prices dropped and technology like SCSI improved, printers became much more affordable for homes and small offices.

Modern laser printing is defined by its incredible precision and ubiquity. Today, printers can reach resolutions of 1200 dpi, making text look extremely sharp. The introduction of the PostScript page-description language was a major turning point. It allowed text, fonts, and graphics to be used largely independent of the printer's specific brand. This helped create the field of desktop publishing when combined with software like PageMaker. From the massive IBM 3800 to the small desktop units of today, laser printing has transformed how we process information. It remains a vital technology for both high-volume business needs and everyday personal use.
