In 1924, scientists at AT&T sent 15 photographs from Cleveland to New York City. That same year, Richard H. Ranger invented a way to send photos through the air using radio. Herbert E. Ives also sent the first color facsimile in 1924 using red, green, and blue colors. In 1964, the Xerox Corporation introduced a version of the modern fax machine. Later, the Dacom company built the first digital fax machine to work in under a minute. These milestones made faxing much faster and easier for everyone to use.

In older analog systems, the machine performed a direct conversion of image darkness into audio-frequency tones. These tones were transmitted through the telephone system using an acoustic coupler, which connected a speaker to a telephone handset.

During this era, they became ubiquitous in almost every office environment. The industry saw a move toward interoperability through international standards. In 1976, the CCITT Recommendation T.3 allowed different Group 2 machines to work together. By 1980, the T.4 recommendation promised even faster digital transmissions of just 40 seconds per page. This standardization led to a massive wave of compact and efficient machines hitting the global market.

Despite the rise of the World Wide Web, faxing maintains unique cultural and practical roles.

In Japan, fax machines are used extensively because of a widespread preference for handwriting over typing. They are so common that they are available in over 81% of all convenience stores nationwide. However, the reliance on faxing has also caused challenges. During the COVID-19 pandemic, some countries like Germany and the United States experienced delays in reporting data. In some German districts, health departments used only fax machines, which led to errors in reporting infection numbers. This highlights how even old technology can impact modern systems of communication.
