The land is mostly rocky and dry with desert plants and animals. While the desert is often dry, the area can sometimes face sudden flash floods. The city is a major center for money, business, and culture in Nevada. It is known all over the world as a place for big resorts and fun.

Many people visit the city to see shows or go shopping.

Most of these big venues are in downtown Las Vegas or on the Las Vegas Strip. The Strip is actually in the towns of Paradise and Winchester. The city is very popular for dining and nightlife too. Because of the many types of adult entertainment, some people call it "Sin City." It is also a very popular place for movies and music videos. In 2023, more than 40.8 million visitors came to see the city.

Long ago, this area was very different. The Southern Paiute people used the land as a home during the winter.

They used the resources found near natural water sources called the Las Vegas Springs. In 1829, a Mexican explorer named Antonio Armijo led a group of men and mules through the area. They saw the green grasses and trees near the water. The Spanish name "las vegas" means "the meadows" in English. This name described the fertile lowlands near the springs. Later, the name was used for the town that grew there.

Las Vegas began to grow as a modern city in 1905.

At that time, land near the railroad tracks was sold to start the downtown area. The city officially became a city in 1911. In 1931, Nevada made some big changes by allowing casino gambling. This helped the city grow even more during the Great Depression. In the 1950s, the city was even called the "Atomic City."
