He was a very talented musician who played many different instruments. Interestingly, he never learned to read musical notation. Instead, he relied on his natural skill and listening. This unique way of working helped him create a massive amount of music.

In his early years, Norman was part of a band called People!. This group performed about 200 concerts every single year. They shared the stage with famous acts like The Who and Janis Joplin. Their song "I Love You" became a huge hit. It sold over one million copies and reached many listeners.

Norman eventually left the band to follow his own spiritual path. He moved to Los Angeles to share his faith on the streets. He even used his money to help people in need.

Norman's solo career began in earnest in 1969. Capitol Records released his first album, titled Upon This Rock. Many people call this the first true Christian rock album. Although some people criticized him, he gained a large following. He performed at big events like Explo '72 in Dallas. This festival was a massive gathering for Christian music fans.

Later, Norman founded Solid Rock Records to help other artists. He wanted musicians to focus on art rather than just making money. Under this label, he produced music for artists like Randy Stonehill. His best-selling album, Another Land, came out in 1976.

Life became harder for him after a plane accident in 1978. He said the accident caused brain damage that made it difficult to focus. This made finishing his musical projects a very hard job for many years.

Despite these struggles, Norman continued to make music. In 1979, he performed at the White House for President Jimmy Carter. He also won a Lifetime Achievement Award in 1989.
