He was a versatile player who could play both inside and outside the hoop. This skill made him one of the first players to use the three-point line well. People called him "Larry Legend" or "the Hick from French Lick" because of his small-town roots. He earned many honors during his long career in the NBA. He is the only person in league history to win Rookie of the Year, Most Valuable Player, Finals MVP, All-Star MVP, Coach of the Year, and Executive of the Year.

Bird won the Most Valuable Player award three times in a row from 1984 to 1986. He also played for the 1992 "Dream Team" that won Olympic gold medals.

Many specific numbers show how great Bird was on the court. In his rookie year, he averaged 21.3 points and 10.4 rebounds per game. He once scored a career-high 60 points against the Atlanta Hawks.
