Kition was founded in the 13th century BC. Over time, many different groups lived there, including the Phoenicians and the Greeks. The city was even part of the Persian Achaemenid Empire. Some people believe the name Larnaca comes from the word "larnakes." This is a Greek word for stone boxes or coffins found in the area.

Nature plays a big part in the life of the city. There is a large salt lake that changes with the seasons. In the winter, the lake fills with water. This attracts many pink flamingoes that stay until the end of March. In the summer, the lake usually dries up. The climate is hot and semi-arid with very little rain.

The name Larnaca has very old roots. It comes from an Ancient Greek noun. This word can mean a coffer, a box, or a chest. It can also refer to a cinerary urn or a sarcophagus. Some people believe the name comes from the many larnakes found nearby. A larnax is a type of stone coffin.

An American consul in the late 19th century claimed to have explored over 3,000 tombs in the area. This massive number of sarcophagi may have given the modern town its name. The city is also called "Skala" or "İskele" in Turkish. This name refers to its historic port area.

Larnaca sits on the ruins of an ancient city-state called Kition. Kition was established in the 13th century BC. New cultural elements appeared there between 1200 BC and 1000 BC. These included new pottery and architectural forms. These changes suggest the arrival of Achaean Greek colonists. Around 1000 BC, the Phoenicians rebuilt Kition. It then became a major center for Phoenician culture. The site contained cyclopean walls and five temples. Over time, many empires conquered the area. These included the Assyrian Empire and Egypt. Kition also belonged to the Persian Achaemenid Empire. The Athenian general Cimon died at sea here while supporting a revolt against Persia.

Natural forces have changed the shape of the city over many centuries. Strong earthquakes hit the area in 76 AD and 77 AD. Later, earthquakes in 322 AD and 342 AD caused great destruction. These events damaged Kition, Salamis, and Pafos. The harbor at Kition eventually silted up. Silt is fine sand or clay that settles at the bottom of water. This happened because of earthquakes, deforestation, and overgrazing. As the harbor filled with silt, the population moved south toward the seafront. This movement helped shape the modern location of the city.

The geography of the region includes a large Salt Lake. The lake changes significantly with the seasons. During the winter, the lake fills with water. This attracts large flocks of pink flamingoes. They stay in the area from November until the end of March. In the summer, the lake usually dries up. In the past, people scraped salt from the dried surface. This salt was of good quality. However, salt from the lake is now considered unsuitable for eating.

The climate is classified as hot semi-arid. This is because of low rainfall and hot summers. This creates a highly negative water balance.

Modern Larnaca is a center for tourism and many large businesses. The economy has grown steadily since 1975. This growth followed the loss of the Port of Famagusta. That port once handled 80% of the island's general cargo. Today, the service sector employs three-quarters of the local workforce. Many travel and tour companies have their headquarters here. Large companies like the Bank of Cyprus and KPMG are also based in the city.
