She studied at a film school in Moscow. She learned from a teacher named Alexander Dovzhenko. She followed his motto. She made every film as if it were her last. She worked very hard to make her films look real. Once, she directed a film while lying on a stretcher. She was sick with a disease called Hepatitis A. During another film, the heat was so high that the film melted inside the camera.

Shepitko made many important movies. Her film Wings was about a female pilot. Her film The Ascent was her most famous work. It won a top prize called the Golden Bear in Berlin. The film showed soldiers in a cold winter. She used real actors to make it feel true. She even wore the same clothes as the cast. Sadly, she died in a car accident in 1979. Her husband made a film to honor her life.
