He was born in 1934. He studied at military schools in other countries. He joined the French Army in 1955. Later, he joined the army of Guinea. He rose through the ranks to become a general.

In 1984, Conté took power in a military coup. This is when the military takes control of a government. At first, he released many prisoners. He also helped people return to Guinea from other lands. Later, he helped Guinea move toward civilian rule. This meant people could vote for leaders.

Conté was president for a long time. He won several elections. However, some people thought the votes were not fair. There were also times when people were unhappy. In 2007, many people went on strike. They marched in the streets to protest. This led to some violent clashes. Conté eventually made a deal with labor unions. He appointed a new Prime Minister to help lead. Conté died in 2008.
