Landscape photography is the art of capturing the world's outdoor spaces.

These images can represent vast, unending vistas or even microscopic details. Most landscape photographers focus on the presence of nature. However, the field is very broad and includes human-made features. When photographers focus on cities or the built environment, it is called urban landscape photography. This approach can include rural settings, industrial areas, or even artificial scenery like orchards and gardens. Even buildings, roads, and bridges can be part of a landscape if they are presented in an artistic style.

To create these images, photographers must manage several technical mechanics. They often use daylight to capture natural features of land, sky, and water. Many artists prefer the "golden hour," which occurs just before sunset.

During this time, the light shows scenes in the best colors. Photographers must also control the aperture, which is the size of the hole that lets light into the camera. A small aperture, such as an f-stop between 11 and 13, helps keep the entire scene in sharp focus. This technique increases the depth of field, which is the range of the scene that remains clear. Because a small aperture limits light, the photographer may need a slower shutter speed to compensate.

Different types of lenses allow for different artistic perspectives. A wide-angle lens is the preferred tool for "wide open spaces" because it provides a broad angle of view.

In contrast, a telephoto lens can capture detailed scenery of small areas from a distance. Telephoto lenses also cause compression, making distant elements appear closer to each other. Some photographers use a fisheye lens for extremely wide and dramatic angles. Others use a macro or micro lens for extreme close-up work. While many use variable-range zoom lenses, some prefer fixed-range prime lenses for higher clarity and quality.

History shows that landscape photography can drive significant social change. In the mid-19th century, William Henry Jackson captured the American West. His work was instrumental in convincing Congress to create Yellowstone in 1872. This was the first national park in the United States. In the 20th century, Philip Hyde used his photography to promote the preservation of natural spaces in the Western United States. The renowned Ansel Adams also used his art to raise awareness about environmentalism. His influence on wilderness preservation was so great that he received a Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Modern landscape photography also addresses the impact of human industry. Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky is acclaimed for his images of human-altered landscapes.

His work investigates the impact humans have had on the environment through a sense of sublime grandeur. He captures subjects such as railways, abandoned mines, quarries, and oil fields. Burtynsky balances beautiful aesthetics with the reality of landscapes damaged by industrialization. This helps viewers see the connection between human activity and environmental change.

Technical tools like light sensitivity and filters add more layers to the craft. The medium, whether film or a digital sensor, has a specific sensitivity to light. In bright daylight, photographers prefer a low-ISO setting, such as ISO 100, for maximum precision.

If the scene is dark, such as during twilight or at night, a higher ISO may be necessary. This allows for faster shutter speeds to "freeze" motion. However, high ISO settings can sometimes result in grainy pictures. Photographers also use filters, such as a polarizing filter, to darken the sky or manage reflections.

Finally, landscape photography has become a major part of global tourism. Countries like Iceland, New Zealand, Scotland, and Canada are very popular with photography tourists.

This interest has turned landscape workshops and tours into a large business. Many travelers now use mobile apps to find the most popular locations and learn how to photograph them. Whether capturing a flowing waterfall
