life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Lambeosaurus was a special kind of dinosaur. It belonged to a group called hadrosaurids. These animals lived in western North America. This was during the Late Cretaceous period.

They lived on a coastal plain. This land had many winding rivers. These rivers separated areas of thick plants. You would see many ferns and shrubs there.

Many other animals lived in this same place. These included fish, mammals, and even other huge dinosaurs.

This dinosaur had a very unique look. It had a hollow cranial crest on its head. This crest is a bony growth that sits above the eyes. It also goes slightly over the snout.

Some adults even had a small spur pointing backward. Scientists think this crest helped the dinosaur make sounds. It may have acted like a resonating device for vocalization. The crest also helped them recognize their own species.

It also helps scientists tell young dinosaurs from adults. The crest grows a lot as the animal gets older.

Finding these fossils was a big job for experts. In the 1880s and 1890s, people found fossils in Alberta, Canada.

A scientist named Lawrence M. Lambe led many expeditions. He worked in the badlands near the Red Deer River. The fossils there were very fragile and hard to dig up.

Later, Charles Hazelius Sternberg also found many important skeletons. His work helped us learn so much about these creatures.

Naming the dinosaur took a long time. First, Lambe thought a skull belonged to a genus called Stephanosaurus.

Later, William A. Parks decided it was a new genus. He named it Lambeosaurus lambei in 1923. He did this to honor Lawrence Lambe.

Since then, more species have been named. These include L. clavinitialis and L. magnicristatus. Some fossils once called Procheneosaurus are now known to be young Lambeosaurus.

Lambeosaurus was built for a busy life. It could move on two legs or four legs.

It had a deep tail and long limbs. Its skin had small scales that were not bumpy.

This dinosaur had a specific way of eating. It liked to browse on plants low to the ground. This helped it avoid fighting for food with Prosaurolophus.

It lived alongside many other famous dinosaurs like Corythosaurus.
