Lake Victoria is a massive freshwater body in Africa.

It is the largest lake in Africa by surface area. It is also the world's largest tropical lake. Globally, it is the second-largest freshwater lake by surface area. Only Lake Superior in North America is larger. The lake sits in a shallow depression on the African continent.

Its area is divided among three nations. Tanzania occupies 49% of the surface. Uganda holds 45% of the area. Kenya contains the remaining 6%.

The lake's formation is a result of complex geological shifts. Geologists believe the lake is about 400,000 years old. It formed when a fractured block of the Earth's crust tilted. This happened along the line of the Great Rift Valley. This tilting caused westward-flowing rivers to back up.

During the Miocene era, the area was a continental divide. Streams on the west flowed into the Congo River basin. Streams on the east flowed to the Indian Ocean. As the East African Rift System formed, the western wall rose. This reversed the drainage toward the current basin. The opening of the rifts downwarped the land between them. This created the depression that holds the lake today.

Lake Victoria has experienced dramatic changes in its history. It may have once been a series of smaller lakes. Geological cores show the lake dried up completely at least three times. These cycles likely relate to past ice ages. During these times, global precipitation declined significantly. The lake last dried out about 17,300 years ago. It refilled roughly 14,700 years ago during the African humid period. This refilling allowed life to flourish once again.

The hydrology of the lake is driven largely by the weather. About 80 percent of the water comes from direct rainfall. The Kagera River is the largest river flowing into the lake. It enters the western shore. Many other rivers enter through the Kenyan sector. These include the Sio, Yala, and Nyando rivers. The lake has only one outflow. The Nile River drains the lake near Jinja, Uganda.

This makes Lake Victoria the principal source of the longest branch of the Nile. The upper section is known as the Victoria Nile.

Lake Victoria is a unique ecosystem for many species. It is famous for its cichlid fish. There are more species of cichlids here than in any other lake. Most of these are endemic, meaning they live nowhere else.

These fish underwent rapid adaptive radiation over 15,000 years. They evolved into at least 16 different ecological groups. Some eat plankton, while others eat insects or mollusks. Other wildlife includes hippopotamuses and Nile crocodiles.

Mammals like the African clawless otter also live in the wetlands.

However, the lake faces serious ecological challenges. An invasive species called the Nile perch was introduced.

This predator has driven many endemic species to extinction. It is estimated that 40 percent of haplochromine cichlids are gone. Some species have survived by adapting to new conditions. For example, some developed larger gills for low-oxygen water. Others changed their eyes to see in turbid water. The lake also experiences eutrophication. This is caused by nutrient inflows and pollution from human settlements. These factors increase algal biomass and change oxygen levels.

Physical changes are also visible in the lake's size and depth. The lake is relatively shallow. Its average depth is about 40 meters. The maximum depth is approximately 84 meters.

Recent data shows the surface area is changing. Between 2010 and 2022, the area increased by 15 percent. This expansion has flooded some lakeside communities. The lake remains a vital part of the African landscape. It connects many people and biological systems through its waters.
