Lake Victoria is a big lake.

Lake Victoria is a very big lake.
Most of the water comes from rain.
Many fish live in the water.
Other animals live near the water too. You might see a hippo. You might also see a crocodile. It is a busy place for nature.
Lake Victoria is a very big lake in Africa.

Most of the water comes from rain. Rivers also flow into the lake. The Kagera River is the largest river that flows in. The Nile River flows out of the lake near Uganda. This makes the lake a main source for the Nile.
Many animals live in and around the water. You might see a hippo or a crocodile. The lake is famous for its fish. Many fish species live only here. These are called cichlids.
Lake Victoria is a massive body of water in Africa.

Most of the water in the lake comes from rain. About 80 percent of the water comes from direct rainfall. Many small streams and rivers also flow into it. The Kagera River is the largest river that enters the lake. The Kagera River enters on the western shore. The lake only has one way to drain out. The Nile River flows out near Jinja in Uganda.
Geologists believe the lake is relatively young. It may be about 400,000 years old. It formed when the Earth's crust tilted near the Great Rift Valley.
Many different animals live in and around the water. You might see a hippopotamus or a Nile crocodile.

However, the lake faces many changes today. An invasive fish called the Nile perch was introduced. This large fish has caused many native species to go extinct.

Lake Victoria is a massive freshwater body in Africa.

The lake's formation is a result of complex geological shifts. Geologists believe the lake is about 400,000 years old. It formed when a fractured block of the Earth's crust tilted. This happened along the line of the Great Rift Valley. This tilting caused westward-flowing rivers to back up.
Lake Victoria has experienced dramatic changes in its history. It may have once been a series of smaller lakes. Geological cores show the lake dried up completely at least three times. These cycles likely relate to past ice ages. During these times, global precipitation declined significantly. The lake last dried out about 17,300 years ago. It refilled roughly 14,700 years ago during the African humid period. This refilling allowed life to flourish once again.
The hydrology of the lake is driven largely by the weather. About 80 percent of the water comes from direct rainfall. The Kagera River is the largest river flowing into the lake. It enters the western shore. Many other rivers enter through the Kenyan sector. These include the Sio, Yala, and Nyando rivers. The lake has only one outflow. The Nile River drains the lake near Jinja, Uganda.
Lake Victoria is a unique ecosystem for many species. It is famous for its cichlid fish. There are more species of cichlids here than in any other lake. Most of these are endemic, meaning they live nowhere else.

However, the lake faces serious ecological challenges. An invasive species called the Nile perch was introduced.
Physical changes are also visible in the lake's size and depth. The lake is relatively shallow. Its average depth is about 40 meters. The maximum depth is approximately 84 meters.
