Lake Garda is the largest lake in Italy.

It is a major holiday destination located in northern Italy. The lake sits between Brescia and Milan to the west. To the east, it lies near Verona and Venice. The shoreline is divided among three provinces: Brescia, Verona, and Trentino. The lake cuts into the edge of the Italian Alps. It sits near the Garda Mountains and the Brenta Group. This large body of water is a central feature of the regional landscape.

The shape of the lake is a moraine valley. This means it was formed by the movement of glaciers. These glaciers acted during the last ice age. They carved a deep depression into the Earth. Some scientists believe a glacier occupied a depression created by stream erosion millions of years ago. The northern part of the lake sits deep inside an alpine depression. The southern part opens into the upper Pianura Padana. To the south, a large morainic amphitheatre exists.

This is a series of circular hills. These hills were created by the transport and storage of debris by the great Garda glacier. They were formed during several glaciations, including the Würm and Riss.

The lake's water system is quite specific. The Sarca River is the main tributary that flows into the lake. Other sources include the Ponale River and various mountain streams. The only outlet for the water is the Mincio River.

This outlet is located at Peschiera. A submerged fault exists between Sirmione and Punta San Vigilio. This fault acts as a natural barrier. It prevents the water in the two zones from mixing easily. If the Adige River has too much water, it is diverted through the Mori-Torbole tunnel.

The history of the lake is very long. People lived here during the Middle Paleolithic period. They left behind flint tools on higher slopes. During the Bronze Age, people built stilt houses in the lower lake. The lake was a meeting point for the Reti, Veneti, and Etruscans. In Roman times, the lake was called Benacus.

Some people even worshipped the lake as a god. The name Garda is of Germanic origin. It comes from the word *warda*, meaning a place of observation or safety. This name likely arrived with the Lombard people between the 6th and 8th centuries CE.

The area is known for being very seismic. This means it experiences many earthquakes. The oldest known earthquake occurred around the year 243 or 245. It was so powerful that the city of Benaco disappeared. A mountain landslide likely caused a lake to flood the town. Many other earthquakes have happened since then. In 1892, a very violent earthquake shook the entire region. It caused walls and chimneys to fall. More recent tremors occurred in 1901 and 2004.

The climate at Lake Garda is remarkably mild. This is due to the lake's orientation toward the Po Valley. The basin creates a unique microclimate. This allows Mediterranean plants to grow far north. You can find olive trees, cypress, and even lemon trees here.

Such plants are very rare at this latitude. The lake also experiences regular daily winds. These winds are caused by temperature differences between the mountains and the plains. Winds descend from the mountains in the morning. They return to the mountains in the afternoon.

Lake Garda supports many unique living things. The carpione is a rare fish found only here. It is a salmonid fish that is now critically endangered.

Lake trout also live in the water. These trout can reach 50 centimeters in length. The lake also has five main islands. The largest is Isola del Garda. Other islands include Isola dell'Olivo and Isola di Sogno. The lake is a place where mountains, water, and history all meet.
