Lake Assal serves as a critical window into Earth's geological processes. It is an ideal experimental site for studying deep, hot brines. Scientists use the lake to understand how salt waters in the Red Sea might have evolved. The lake is also part of a larger system involving the Assal-Ghoubbet Rift. This area is an actively extending continental rift. Eventually, this geological movement could turn the area into an arm of the Red Sea.
