During the medieval era, Lahore served as a capital for several empires. These included the Hindu Shahis, the Ghaznavid Empire, and the Delhi Sultanate. The city's name has appeared in many historical records with different spellings. Early Muslim historians recorded it as Luhawar or Lūhār. The poet Amir Khusrow recorded it as Lāhanūr. One theory suggests the name comes from the word Ravāwar. This may be a corruption of Iravatyāwar, a name linked to the Ravi River.
