Laayoune is the largest city in Western Sahara. It sits south of a dry river called Saguia el-Hamra. The city name might mean "the springs." This is because water comes from oases. Oases are green spots in the desert with water.

A Spanish captain named Antonio de Oro founded the city. He started it in 1938 as a small camp. The city grew fast in the 1940s. This happened because people found phosphates. Phosphates are rocks used in many industries.

The weather is a hot desert climate. The Canary Current helps keep it from getting too hot. The city has a big plant to make salt water fresh. This is called a desalinization plant.

Many people live in Laayoune now. In 2023, the population was 271,344. People work in fishing and mining. The city has the Hassan I Airport. It also has a football club called Jeunesse Massira. The team plays in the Moroccan Second Division. Many countries have offices in the city. These offices are called consulates. They help with ties between nations.
