Scientists also study the eruption's connection to global climate. There is a debate about whether it caused the Younger Dryas. The Younger Dryas was a period of global cooling. Some evidence suggests the eruption happened immediately before this cooling began. This could mean the volcano acted as a trigger for the cold period. Current estimates place the eruption at 12,880 to 13,006 years ago. However, some scientists worry that magmatic carbon dioxide might have made radiocarbon dates appear too old. This uncertainty makes the exact timing of the climate shift a complex puzzle.
Today, Laacher See is considered a dormant volcano. This means it is not currently erupting, but it is not entirely inactive. On the southeastern shore, you can observe mofettas. Mofettas are places where volcanic gases bubble up from the ground.
