La Venta was a special place for meetings and prayer. Most of the city was made from earth and clay. They did not have much stone nearby. They had to bring big basalt stones from far away. They used these stones to make huge monuments.

The most famous things they made are colossal heads. These are giant stone heads that weigh many tons. People think they show the faces of strong leaders. They also built a Great Pyramid out of clay. This pyramid is very tall. One part of the city, called Complex A, had many treasures. They buried jade and pretty stone patterns deep in the ground. These patterns were made of green serpentine blocks.

La Venta was a very important city for the Olmec people. The Olmec were one of the first big civilizations in the Americas. Many people call them the "mother culture" of Mesoamerica. This is because their ideas and ways of life spread to other groups.

The city sat in a wet, tropical area in Mexico. It was located on an island in a swampy place. The land was near the Gulf of Mexico.

This area had many different types of nature, like forests and marshes.

The city was built in a very special way. Most of the buildings were made from local earth and clay. This was because there was not much stone nearby for building.

The city was planned with a north-south direction. Some parts even showed a special symmetry. This means the east and west sides looked almost the same. This shows the Olmec were very good at planning cities.

They even used the stars to help them align their buildings.

The history of La Venta is very long. Before this city was big, another place called San Lorenzo was important. San Lorenzo was a major center from 1200 to 900 BCE.

After San Lorenzo declined, La Venta became the main center. It reached its peak after 900 BCE. The city was used for a long time. By the beginning of the fourth century BCE, people had left the site. Archaeologists like Matthew Stirling helped us learn about it.

There are many amazing things at the site. The most famous are the four colossal heads. These giant stone heads might show the faces of Olmec rulers.

They were made from basalt stones. These heavy stones came from the Tuxtla Mountains. That trip was over 80 kilometers away! The city also had a Great Pyramid made of clay.

This pyramid held about 100,000 cubic meters of earth. In Complex A, they buried beautiful things like jade and green serpentine blocks.

Today, we can still learn much from La Venta. Some of the city is covered by a petroleum refinery. This makes it hard for scientists to dig there.

La Venta was a major civic and ceremonial center for the Olmec civilization. The Olmecs were one of the first civilizations to develop in the Americas. Many historians call them the "mother culture" of Mesoamerica. This means their cultural traits influenced many later societies in the region.

The site is located in the modern Mexican state of Tabasco. It sat on an island in a coastal swamp. This island was part of the largest alluvial plane in Mexico. The area was a nexus of four different ecosystems. These included marshes, mangrove swamps, tropical forests, and the Gulf of Mexico.

The history of La Venta is divided into specific time periods. The Olmec history includes the Early Formative, Middle Formative, and Late Formative periods. Before La Venta became important, the site of San Lorenzo dominated the region. San Lorenzo was the most prominent center by 1200 BCE. La Venta began to show occupation around that same time. However, La Venta did not reach its peak until after 900 BCE. This happened as San Lorenzo began to decline. La Venta remained a powerful center for many years. Eventually, the site was all but abandoned by the start of the fourth century BCE.

The city layout shows a very high level of sophisticated planning. Most of the city was built using earth and clay. This was because local stone was not very abundant. The urbanized zone may have covered about 2 square kilometers. The main part of the site was a complex of clay constructions. These buildings stretched out in a north-south direction. The site was actually oriented 8 degrees west of north. The layout showed bilateral symmetry. This means the east and west sides were almost identical. This design might have been related to their religious beliefs.

One of the most important structures was Complex C, known as the Great Pyramid. This building is the central part of the city layout. It is constructed almost entirely out of clay. The pyramid is very large and contains about 100,000 cubic meters of earth fill. It is one of the earliest pyramids known in Mesoamerica. While it looks conical now, it was likely once a rectangular pyramid. Recent work shows it had stepped sides and inset corners. The current shape is likely caused by 2,500 years of erosion.

Complex A was another vital part of the city. It was a mound and plaza group located north of the Great Pyramid. This area was likely a restricted sacred space for the elite. The centerline of Complex A originally oriented toward the star Polaris. This suggests the Olmec had knowledge of astronomy. Archaeologists found many buried offerings here. These included jade and polished mirrors made of iron-ores. They also found five "Massive Offerings" made of serpentine blocks. One offering contained 50 tons of serpentine. This was covered by 4,000 tons of clay fill.

The Olmec also created massive stone monuments. The most famous are the four colossal heads found at La Venta. These are officially named Monuments 1 through 4. These heads are thought to represent mighty Olmec rulers. They were carved from basalt stones. These heavy stones were brought from the Tuxtla Mountains. That distance was over 80 kilometers away. The heads can weigh several tons. They also wear unique headgear that looks like football helmets.

La Venta served as a place for both elite and public life. Complex B was a plaza built for large public gatherings. It was located south of the Great Pyramid. Researchers believe the platforms there acted as stages. Ritual dramas were likely performed for people in the plaza. This allowed art to communicate messages to many viewers at once. Today, much of the southern end is covered by a petroleum refinery. This makes it difficult for scientists to excavate the area. However, many artifacts are preserved in a museum in Villahermosa.
