Before this, many Vietnamese dynasties lasted only a short time. The Lý leaders changed that by focusing on peace and a strong economy. They used the rule of law to lead the people. This helped the country grow in a very steady way.

To make the country work well, the leaders did many things. They helped farmers by building dikes and canals to manage water. This made it easier to grow food for everyone. They also moved the capital to a place called Đại La.

Later, a leader named Lý Nhân Tông became the longest-reigning ruler. He was helped by many smart scholars like Tô Hiến Thành. These men worked hard to keep the government running well. Even during wars, like the battle against the Song dynasty, leaders like Lý Thường Kiệt protected the land.

The Lý dynasty ended in a very unusual way. In 1225, the ruler was an eight-year-old girl named Lý Chiêu Hoàng. She was pressured to give up her throne to her husband, Trần Cảnh. This moment marked the end of a long and famous era. The ways the Lý dynasty organized the state lasted for a long time. Many later dynasties used the same capital city that the Lý leaders chose.

The Lý dynasty was a major era in Vietnamese history that lasted for 216 years. It began in 1009 and ended in 1225. During this time, the state was known as Đại Cồ Việt until 1054. After that, it was renamed Đại Việt. This name remained the official title of the country until the 19th century. The dynasty was unique because it provided long-term stability. Most Vietnamese dynasties before the Lý fell apart shortly after their founders died. The Lý leaders changed this pattern by building a strong, lasting government.

The dynasty began when Lý Công Uẩn took power in 1009. He overthrew the Anterior Lê dynasty after its last emperor, Lê Long Đĩnh, died. Lý Công Uẩn was of Min Chinese ancestry on his father's side. He was adopted as a child by a monk named Lý Khánh Văn. Before becoming emperor, he rose through the ranks of the palace guard. In 1010, he moved the capital from Hoa Lư to Đại La. He renamed this new capital Thăng Long. This move was very important for the country's future. Today, we know this historic site as Hanoi.

Internal stability was a key part of the Lý administration. They moved away from purely autocratic rule toward a system based on the rule of law. The government even introduced the "Hình thư," which was the first formal system of law and legislation in Vietnam. To support the economy, the emperors focused heavily on agriculture. They ordered the construction and repair of dikes and canals to manage water. They also allowed soldiers to return to their villages for six months each year to work the land. These steps helped the population grow and the economy flourish.

Education and religion also shaped the dynasty's culture. The emperors were very devout followers of Buddhism. They supported many religious projects, such as the carving of Buddha statues.

At the same time, Confucianism began to influence the state. In 1070, Emperor Lý Thánh Tông built the Temple of Literature to honor Confucius. In 1076, the Quốc Tử Giám was established in the same complex. This was Vietnam's first university institution. It was originally meant for the children of the imperial family and the nobility. The first imperial examination was held in 1075. A man named Lê Văn Thịnh became the first Trạng Nguyên, or top scholar, of Vietnam.

The dynasty also had to manage complex political challenges. In 1028, a crisis occurred when three princes attacked the palace to challenge the crown prince, Lý Phật Mã. After winning the conflict, Lý Phật Mã became Emperor Lý Thái Tông. He chose to show mercy by pardoning his brothers. Later, the dynasty faced external threats from neighbors like the Champa Kingdom and the Song dynasty. In 1069, Lý Thánh Tông led an expedition against Champa. This resulted in the capture of King Rudravarman III. The king had to sign a treaty and give three territories to Đại Việt.

Military leadership was vital during times of war. In 1075, tensions with the Song dynasty grew very high. The Song emperor prepared to annex Đại Việt. In response, the leader Lý Thường Kiệt led a preemptive invasion into Song territory. He captured several locations, including Qinzhou and Lianzhou. He also laid siege to Yongzhou. Later, when the Song sent a large army to invade, Lý Thường Kiệt stopped them at the Battle of Như Nguyệt in 1077. This conflict ended with a peace treaty. The Song recognized the ruler Lý Nhân Tông as the King of Nam Bình.

Throughout the dynasty, many noblemen and scholars made huge contributions. People like Tô Hiến Thành were very important to the court. Tô Hiến Thành was a loyal chancellor who helped organize successful military campaigns. The dynasty's long life was supported by these talented officials. However, the era eventually came to an end due to a change in leadership. In 1225, the last ruler, Lý Chiêu Hoàng, was only eight years old. She was pressured to abdicate her throne to her husband, Trần Cảnh. This event ended the 216-year reign of the Lý clan.
