Lê Đức Thọ was a leader from Vietnam.

He was a very strong man. Some people called him "the Hammer." This was because he was very strict.

When he was young, he fought for his country. He was put in a hard prison by the French. The prison was on an island called Côn Sơn. Life there was very difficult. He dealt with heat and hunger. Even so, he and other prisoners studied science and languages. They even acted in plays.

Later, Thọ helped lead a group called the Viet Minh. This group wanted independence for Vietnam. In 1970, he went to Paris for peace talks. He met with an American named Henry Kissinger. They had many secret meetings. These talks lasted for three years. They worked to reach a peace deal in 1973.

Thọ was the first Asian to win the Nobel Peace Prize. He won it with Henry Kissinger. But Thọ said no to the award. He did not want to take it.
