It is famous for being Russia's first public museum. People visit it to see many different things from the natural world. It is also known as the Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography. This name helps show its focus on people and different cultures. Today, the museum holds nearly 2,000,000 items in its collection. These objects come from many different countries around the globe.

The museum began with a personal collection of curiosities.

A ruler named Peter the Great wanted to learn about the world. He started his collection as an imperial cabinet of curiosities. This was called a "kunstkammer" in German. He used these items to gain knowledge about nature. He wanted to show how the world worked. Peter focused more on natural things than things made by humans. He even studied birth defects to teach people about nature.

Peter the Great started showing his items to the public in 1714.

At first, the collection was kept at the Summer Palace. The museum grew larger as Peter bought more things. He bought items from Dutch collectors like Albertus Seba and Frederik Ruysch. He also bought gems and tools from Jacob de Wilde. These new items meant the museum needed more space. This growth helped lead to the creation of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The museum moved to its current home in 1727.

This building was designed by a Prussian architect named Georg Johann Mattarnovy. It is built in a style called Petrine Baroque. The building has a tall spire on top. This spire features a large armillary sphere. An armillary sphere is a model used to show the sky. The foundation stone for this building was laid in 1719.

Many things have changed since the museum first opened.

In 1747, some objects were lost during a fire. Later, in the 1830s, many items were moved to new museums. The museum became the Peter the Great Museum in 1903. It sits on the Universitetskaya Embankment facing the Winter Palace. It remains a major place for studying human history. The museum connects the past to how we study science today.
